Verizon iPhone can act at a Wi-Fi mobile hotspot for up to 5 devices

We mentioned this in the announcement post about the Verizon iPhone 4, but it's worth repeating. The Verizon iPhone, which was running iOS 4.2.5 at today's demo, includes a mobile hotspot feature. What this means is that you can enable a feature that would allow the iPhone to act a a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, similar to a MiFi or other Android devices. When acting as a hotspot, you can connect up to five devices to the iPhone, taking advantage of its connection to the Verizon network. There were no details on what the feature would cost, or how much bandwidth would be allowed, but it's definitely nice to know that the feature is coming.

Verizon iPhone 4: Available February 10 for $199

This morning Verizon officially and formally announced the availability of the iPhone on their Verizon Wireless network. "Today we're partnering with a giant of the industry, and that's Apple." At a special press event dedicated to the announcement, the company said that they've been working with Apple for two years, the last of which was spent testing a CDMA version of the iPhone to ensure that it would perform as expected on the Verizon network. The Verizon iPhone 4 will launch on February 10th (pre-orders for existing Verizon Wireless customers start on February 3rd,) and it will cost the same $199 that AT&T charges, with two-year contract.

One significant difference that Verizon is offering that AT&T doesn't--the Verizon iPhone 4 will act as a mobile hotspot, allowing up to five devices to tether to the phone over Wi-Fi to use its data connection.

WSJ: Verizon iPhone coming early 2011

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple is readying plans to mass produce a CDMA version of the that would allow Verizon Wireless to sell the phone early next year. They say their sources are “people briefed by Apple,” and we know that we’ve all gone over this rumor numerous times over the past couple of years, but it seems that 2011 marks the end of the AT&T exclusivity on the iPhone in the US, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see it hit Verizon in the first quarter of 2011.

In other news, WSJ reports that Apple is already hard at work on the iPhone 5. Of course, with it expected to launch in just 8 months, that really isn’t news at all.

Verizon iPhone 4

According to Bloomberg, it seems that Wireless may finally start offering the iPhone to customers, starting in January 2011. Many have wondered when AT&T’s exclusive grip on the iPhone would be coming to an end, and “two people familiar with the plans” are pointing to January. As expected, Verizon and Apple spokespersons have declined to comment, but we wouldn’t be shocked if we saw the drop on Verizon in the new year.

You know, the Verizon iPhone rumor mill just won’t let up, but this time we are paying a bit more attention. According to Digitimes, has put in orders to have a CDMA manufactured. If that is the case, that really could only mean that the iPhone is coming to Verizon and/or Sprint. Of course, we won’t know if any of this means anything until Apple tells us it does.

Analyst: iPhone will soon be available on all US wireless carriers

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds, Rumors,

Verizon iPhoneGotta love those analysts, as they’re always good for stirring the rumor mill - this time it’s BusinessWeek reporting claims that will likely be ending it’s exclusive relationship with AT&T in order to bring the iPhone to all major US carriers. According to Tim Horan, telecommunications analyst at Oppenheimer & Co., T-Mobile USA should have the iPhone available this summer (whatever the follow-up to the iPhone 3GS turns out to be,) with Verizon and Sprint getting the goods this fall. Even Clearwire will be able to get in on the action, as they are expected to get the iPhone sometime in 2011. Of course, AT&T has been the exclusive carrier of the iPhone since it launched in June 2007.

Of course, Apple has the perfect opportunity to announce changes like this if they’d like, as they’ve got what many are predicting to be a colossal Apple event on January 27th, just two days from now. We’ll keep you posted.
